The Iron Trial, by Holly Black and Cassandra Clare

This fantasy book by Holly Black and Cassandra Clare was the winner of the Iowa Teen Award in 2016–17. It begins with a boy named Callum, who throughout his life was warned by his father to stay away from magic and the supposedly dangerous Magisterium. However, Callum is forced to enlist through chaotic circumstances during the enlisting trials. Along the way, he makes some friends. Together they will have to confront the dark war that has stopped but not concluded. As the first in a series of five Magisterium books, The Iron Trial can either work as a standalone novel or open a whole new world. I would highly recommend this book if you’re looking for a thrilling twist to pass the time.
